Sustainable Facility eNews
March 2008 Edition

Greetings and welcome to the March 2008 edition of the Sustainable Facility eNews.

In like a lion... We're in the trenches of early March winter storms and sinus-problem-inducing weather patterns here in southeast Michigan. I awoke last week to nearly seven inches of snow covering my driveway and this week's forecast calls for falling weather, but with temps in the low 50s. Throw the loss of an hour to daylight savings into the mix, and yours truly is even more discombobulated than usual. Good times.

recylcingAll personal grudges against the weather here in the mitten state aside, I'm proud to report that BNP Media's internal recycling program, spearheaded by employee Kristen Field, recycled 30,445 pounds of paper and cardboard in 2007! This represents nearly a 30 percent  increase from 2006, which means that the program is growing and staff members are doing a great job of supporting the initiative! To quantify the results, our efforts for the year saved:

  • 258.78 trees
  • 45.67 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 106,559 gallons of water
  • 14,827 kilowatts of energy

I'm always seeking success stories from Sustainable Facility readers. Let me know what steps you're taking, and what sustainable strategies have made an impact on your buildings and organizations.

In terms of conservation, one outlet we've found that helps avoid travel emissions and time away from the office is the online Webinar. On March 19, the Green Building Initiative (GBI) is presenting Life Cycle Assessment and Existing Buildings. This online event is sponsored by Sustainable Facility's sister publication, Environmental Design + Construction, and targets building owners and facility managers. For more information, visit www.thegbi.org/webinars/20080319/.

And, along with regularly updated Breaking News and Calendar of Events sections, Sustainable Facility's website, www.SustainableFacility.com , also includes "Only Online" exclusive features that you won't find in our print or digital editions. Be sure to visit regularly - and register as a user - to stay up on events shaping the world of sustainable facility management.

Thanks for reading.
