Sustainable Facility eNews
June 2008 Edition

Greetings and welcome to the June 2008 edition of the Sustainable Facility eNews.

JMayton

Well, summer's almost officially here, and the gas and energy prices are soaring.
That seems to be the unfortunate trend these days, as more and more facilities and organizations look for ways to cut costs and conserve resources.
The case for reducing consumption and implementing new strategies has been made on a global scale, and integrating energy-efficient practices and products are but some of the initiatives that more professionals are turning to (or are at least becoming more receptive to...)
According to results from a recent International Facility Management Association (IFMA) research report, Benchmarks V: Annual Facility Costs, the overall cost of running a facility is 10 percent higher than it was four years ago. Led by a dramatic increase in utility costs - which include electricity, gasoline, fuel oil, steam water and sewage - the study shows that utility costs  have jumped 19 percent compared to similar data from 2006.
Makes me think twice about turning on the air conditioning to beat the Michigan mugginess...

What are some of your immediate concerns about the rising costs of fuel/energy/materials, et al?
Has your organization called for a more hardline stance against older, less efficient technologies?
How have your facilities been impacted? Any alternatives to outdated models you are researching?
Share your stories with Sustainable Facility: Email me at maytonj@bnpmedia.com and let me know some success you've seen (or hope to see) in regard to "beating the heat."

Thanks for reading.
Stay cool.

Global Warming, Climate Change, and the Built Environment
Rapidly accelerating climate change (global warming), which is caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is now fueling dangerous regional and global environmental events. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration illustrates that buildings are responsible for almost half (48 percent) of all GHG emissions annually. Seventy-six percent of all electricity generated by U.S. power plants goes to supply the Building Sector. Therefore, immediate action in the Building Sector is essential if we are to avoid hazardous climate change.
