Editor's Note

Welcome to Sustainable Facility's Cool Roofing Targeted eNews

There's an episode of Seinfeld where George forgoes a winter coat because all of his derrick2body's warmth is preserved by a Russian hat. While the show probably takes it to an extreme, there is a lot of truth to the notion that a quality cap can prevent heat from escaping. That's why the cool roofing industry abounds with sustainable options.

Twice per year, Sustainable Facility joins forces with sister publications ED+C and Roofing Contractor magazines to create a special section dedicated to the sustainable roofing industry, Cool Roofing Plus.

This eNews highlights cool roofing, hopefully whetting your appetite for the April issue of Sustainable Facility and the Cool Roofing Plus special section. The April issue will also include a 16-page supplement on sustainable design with high-performance protective coatings, which is a partnership between Arkema Inc. and BNP Media. This supplement will provide useful information to readers on the latest developments and technological advancements in green building systems.

Cheers,

Cool Roofing Article

Green Gains a Foothold in the Motor City
by Chris King, editor of Roofing Contractor magazine

At the corner of Woodward and Jefferson in downtown Detroit, the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center houses courtrooms, city offices and the mayor's office. It's also famous for the statue that abuts it-Marshall Fredericks' bronze statue "the Spirit of Detroit"-or, as it's also known, the Jolly Green Giant. Recently, at the same time the statue was being refurbished, a splash of green was added to the building's rooftop in the form of a garden roof.

The story of how the green roof took root there illustrates the ingenuity of a contractor, manufacturers and city officials who found a way to include a garden roof without incurring additional costs or additional weight.
