Editor's Note

Welcome to Sustainable Facility's eNews for April 2009

Technological advances are being made every day. These advances are finding their derrick2way into the systems comprising our buildings, whether it's in the lighting, HVAC, data systems, and even in our buildings' envelopes and interiors. This is great news for sustainability advocates as the bar for what is minimally required is raised.

But raising the bar doesn't come without pain. New and better technology often comes with a new and steeper price tag. As the minimum codes and standards are raised in response to this new technology, building and energy management professionals are stuck with increased upfront costs. This, as has been the case in the past, creates a lot of resistance to the tightening of standards.

What needs to be explained is that codes and standards, especially as they relate to energy consumption, lead to savings elsewhere more often than not. So, while adding an efficient boiler or low-flow faucets throughout a facility that meet a new standard might cost more, they are designed to lead to lesser operating costs.

The latest issue of Sustainable Facility deals with codes and standards, and offers articles that explain how to save some cash while meeting codes. Also included in the April issue are indoor air quality, our Cool Roofing Plus special section, and a 16-page supplement on sustainable design with high-performance protective coatings, which is a partnership between Arkema Inc. and BNP Media. This supplement will provide useful information to readers on the latest developments and technological advancements in green building systems.

Cheers,

Derrick Teal
