Welcome to the Targeted Sustainable Facility eNews: Alternative Energy

Defying gravity to soar above the tops of the booths at Greenbuild and daring to 1b429a74-achallenge the numerous banners and signage hanging from the rafters for supremacy of the first floor's exhibit hall stands this particular wind turbine. It's but one of the many forms of alternative energy on display at this year's show. You can see more of the products and other news gleaned from the show here.

Alternative energy comes in a variety of forms - wind, solar and biofuel are just some of the ever-growing number of examples. Alternative energy presents an opportunity for those who use it to offset rising energy costs and possibly even get money back.

Saint Peter's College to be Powered by 100 Percent Renewable Energy
Effective beginning January 1, 2010, the electricity purchased for all buildings on the Saint Peter's College Jersey City campus will be 100 percent renewable energy for a minimum of one year. Saint Peter's will be the second private college in the state of New Jersey to purchase green energy as its sole source of electricity, thereby displacing an estimated 3,065 metric tons of carbon dioxide throughout the year, which is the equivalent of planting 2,761 acres of trees or removing 7,697,000 miles of vehicle travel from roadways.

The Building Owner's and Operator's Sustainability Solution PV-Photolead
by Michael J. Berning, P.E., LEED AP

What is renewable energy? What is the difference between onsite- and offsite-generated renewable energy? Where can you purchase renewable energy? What is a REC (Renewable Energy Certificate)? There is a lot of talk these days regarding renewable energy. ...

Web Exclusive: Obama Calls for Renewable Energy Plan to Boost Economy with New Technologies
by Alyssa Peconi

A renewable energy economy isn't something that's far off in the future, it's happening all across America right now. In February 2009, President Obama signed the $787 billion economic stimulus bill, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which includes billions of dollars in spending and tax credits for renewable energy, i.e. solar, wind, and water, as well as for environmental restoration, national parks, cleaner cars and other energy efficiency programs. ...

Web Exclusive: Powerful Parking
by Dr. JoAnne Castagna

AR-and-standard-Photo-3leadDuring President Obama's inauguration speech on Jan. 20, 2009, he said, "We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories." Obama and the new administration believe that renewable energy is part of our nation's successful future-possibly because the federal government has already experienced positive results. ...

Alternative Energy and Belief Systems
by Joseph Salimando

I've been a true believer (see Eric Hoffer) in solar energy, wind power, recycling, composting, ethanol production, and such for decades. Unfortunately, believing in alternative energy's possibilities can leave one as vulnerable as a conspiracy theorist: The words prove it can be devastating to expectations about alternative energy. Making a detailed argument for energy alternatives requires a lot of knowledge about science, agriculture, economics, and world hunger. For the moment, let's deal with the world as it is. ...

Renewable Energy: Photovoltaics for Commercial Facilities 135-kW-inverter
by Carl Schultz and David Handman

Renewable energy, which can be replenished at a rate equal to or greater than it is used, is a front-page topic today, with concerns about climate change and dependence on fossil fuels meriting urgent attention. Solar energy can be subdivided into thermal and photovoltaic, with the former being a broad category that includes the use of large arrays of concentrating collectors for power production in the desert southwest and also low-grade heat production of the variety used to heat homes and domestic hot water. ...
