Welcome to the Targeted Sustainable Facility eNews: Energy-Efficient Lighting |
|

In Sustainable Facility's December monthly eNews, I described how a lot of people at Greenbuild were discussing the idea of making our existing facilities more energy efficient. In light of President Obama's recent announcement to provide tax credits for more energy-efficient homes, I saw today that the president would also like to increase the amount of tax breaks for manufacturers using green energy in their processes to $5 billion.
Granted, the tax breaks might not be enough incentive for some. After all, some systems (be they solar, wind or some other form of renewable energy system) are quite expensive. While the money is likely to be made back in the long run, the tax break still might not be enough to offset the initial cost.
However, there are still plenty of things the facility manager can do to save money without spending a fortune. One of the easiest is lighting. Manufacturers are doing their best to get their lighting in buildings by making products (whether it's fluorescent, halogen or LED) that fit into existing ballasts.
While switching out the lighting in a 20,000-square-foot office building is still far more expensive and labor intensive than caulking all of the windows in a 1,500-square-foot home, the drop in electricity usage (and subsequent bill) should be immediately noticeable.
For more tips, strategies and tools for commercial buildings, visit www.EnergyStar.gov and select the Buildings & Plants option.
Cheers,

Two Million or More U.S. Buildings Could Benefit From Lighting System Upgrades
More than 2.2 million of the nation's 2.7 million older (pre-1980) commercial buildings have been using the same lighting for the past three decades, the National Lighting Bureau reports. The Bureau estimates that 3 million or more commercial and other nonresidential buildings are candidates for money- and energy-saving lighting-system upgrades
Making Energy Retrofits Work
by Dan Probst and Dana Schneider A recently announced energy retrofit program that took place at the Empire State Building relies on an innovative tenant engagement initiative to reach the facility's goal of reducing energy use by 38 percent.
Powerful Parking
 by Dr. JoAnne Castagna
The National Guard's New Jersey branch sought the expertise of the Army Corps' New York District to construct two open panel photovoltaic carport solar power projects. These projects will not only help the National Guard meet the country's energy mandates but also save money on electricity and earn a profit. |
