Welcome to the Targeted Sustainable Facility eNews: Energy-Efficient Lighting

derrick2

In Sustainable Facility's December monthly eNews, I described how a lot of people at Greenbuild were discussing the idea of making our existing facilities more energy efficient. In light of President Obama's recent announcement to provide tax credits for more energy-efficient homes, I saw today that the president would also like to increase the amount of tax breaks for manufacturers using green energy in their processes to $5 billion.

Granted, the tax breaks might not be enough incentive for some. After all, some systems (be they solar, wind or some other form of renewable energy system) are quite expensive. While the money is likely to be made back in the long run, the tax break still might not be enough to offset the initial cost.

However, there are still plenty of things the facility manager can do to save money without spending a fortune. One of the easiest is lighting. Manufacturers are doing their best to get their lighting in buildings by making products (whether it's fluorescent, halogen or LED) that fit into existing ballasts.

While switching out the lighting in a 20,000-square-foot office building is still far more expensive and labor intensive than caulking all of the windows in a 1,500-square-foot home, the drop in electricity usage (and subsequent bill) should be immediately noticeable.

For more tips, strategies and tools for commercial buildings, visit www.EnergyStar.gov and select the Buildings & Plants option.

Cheers,
