Editor's Note

Welcome to Sustainable Facility's eNews for September 2009

derrick2

The USGBC announced a performance initiative to begin tracking the energy and water usage of LEED 2009-certified buildings. You can read the announcement here or by clicking on the link below. As you can see, the program will provide building owners and managers of these facilities with the resources to better manage a building's energy and water consumption once the data is submitted, but won't cause a revocation of certification if an overuse is reported (that may only occur if the data isn't submitted).

As I asked in this month's ED+C's eNewsletter, would you -- as a building owner or manager -- put to use the resources for reducing your building's energy and water consumption knowing that your certification status isn't at risk as long as you submit the data?

It might sound like a stupid question given that someone who has already gone through the process of certification probably did so for the environmental (and cost) benefits of having a LEED-certified building, but there's a golden rule in journalism: "Never assume, because it only makes and 'ass' of 'u' and 'me.'" So, I'd love to get your thoughts.

While we're on the topic of the USGBC, Sustainable Facility and ED+C magazines are now both USGBC Education Providers. Those of you looking for GBCI continuing education credits toward LEED Professional credentialing maintenance can sign up for our Beyond Cooling & Sustainable - The Five E's of High-Performance Roofing webinar with Duro-Last Roofing's Drew Ballensky on October 21.

Cheers,

Derrick Teal
