Welcome to Sustainable Facility's eNews for October 2009

Managing energy usage is a top priority among facility managers. And some buildings, like data centers, are especially known for being energy hogs because of the racks of servers and related support systems. But even these notorious facilities can go green. Read how in Sustainable Facility's online data center special section -- a glimpse of which is below.
There's still time to sign up for our Beyond Cool & Sustainable - The Five E's of High-Performance Roofing
webinar with Duro-Last Roofing's Drew Ballensky on October 21. Find out how to identify the key attributes of high-performance roofing systems and learn a practical checklist to determine if a roofing system meets new criteria. But, more imporantly, in the words of John 'Bluto' Blutarsky from Animal House, it "don't cost nothin'."
And, finally, our Readers' Choice Awards polls are open and awaiting for you to decide which is the top product in a variety of categories. Visit Vote.SustainableFacility.com to cast your ballot!
Cheers,
Derrick Teal Sustainable Facility Managing Editor

Sustainable Practice for the Facilities Manager -- Retail Price: $85.00
Sustainable Practice for the Facilities Manager fills a the gap between the policy-level sustainability books and the detailed technical documents by focusing on the "what" and "how" of planning and implementing sound environmental management practices in the context of FM operations.
It covers policy and trends on global, European and UK levels affecting businesses; compliance requirements for organizations -- including some sector-specific areas; and best practice, with good and bad case studies showing the business benefits of incorporating sustainable practice into day-to-day activities.

The Greening of Backup Power
by Frank DeLattre Batteries have been the de facto standard in uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems mostly because they're low in cost. However, when one is looking at green initiatives in the data center, batteries are far cry from being eco friendly.
Green Data Centers by Ron Bednar Here are four suggestions for helping companies move toward a high-efficiency infrastructure without compromising availability or scalability. (with video)
Efficiency in the Data Center
by Mike Wagner The real cost of data centers is not just in the power being used but in the costs of the infrastructure equipment -- generators, UPSs, PDUs, cabling and cooling systems.
Products: Onset's new
TMC6-HE air temperature sensor is designed for a range of energy monitoring applications -- from monitoring the efficiency of solar thermal systems to tracking building energy use -- the sensor's copper-plated probe ensures high-accuracy measurements and faster response time than previous models, the company reports. The sensor can be attached to water pipes, hot water storage tanks, boilers and is compatible with a number of Onset HOBO U12 USB data loggers.
Pentadyne Power Corporation's GTX flywheel
delivers 25 percent more energy storage than previous models, the company reports. The 25 percent increase in energy storage allows UPS customers to reduce the number of flywheels and the cost needed to bridge the gap between utility power losses and transition to a back-up generator system. The flywheel operates with no bearings and no vacuum pump, making the GTX flywheel highly reliable and virtually maintenance free.

AppliedSensor's iAQ-2000 Sensor Module is designed to go beyond traditional carbon dioxide sensors by also detecting CO, CH4
, LPG, alcohols, ketones, organic acids, amines, aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons, the company reports. Mounted on a compact PC board, the module is integrated into building automation systems and offers multiple digital and analog output signals for flexible communications with air circulation systems. The unit is designed for integration in air handling units and HVAC systems in hotel guest rooms, bathrooms, schools, offices, gyms, and other commercial facilities.

| BlueSeal, from WaterLess Co, LLC
, is a long-lasting, environmentally friendly trap sealant for waterless urinal systems, the company reports. It has a specific gravity lower than water or urine so it lasts for extended periods of time-if not indefinitely. Using BlueSeal reportedly helps keep sewer odors from being released into the air. It has zero evaporation at 100 degrees Fahrenheit and does not freeze until minus 70 degrees. This helps facilities minimize or eliminate urinal winterization costs. |
